Alytus region

Alytus region is located in the South of Lithuania. Here flows the longest river in Lithuania – the Nemunas. Vast woodlands lie on the banks of the river. There are also the Bambena, the Peršėkė,the Varėnė rivers and more than 70 lakes in the region. The biggest lakes are Žuvintas lake (970 hectares), Didžiulis or Daugai lake (907 hectares), Obelija lake (570 hectares), Giluitis lake (245 hectares).

Alytus region covers an area of 1411 square kilometres and is divided into 11 parishes: Alytus, Alovė, Butrimonys, Daugai, Miroslavas, Krokialaukis, Nemunaitis, Pivašiūnai, Punia, Raitininkai, Simnas. Daugai and Simnas are towns.

There is a big number of the protected areas in the Alytus region. Žuvintas State Biosphere Reserve is the oldest in Lithuania established by Tadas Ivanauskas in 1937. There also parts of Dzūkija National, Meteliai and Nemunas Bends‘ regional parks, Pivašiūnai and Sudvajai geomorphological, Balkasodis botanical, Sabališkis and Varčia pedological reserves. A lot of Lithuanian prominent art and science personalities were born and grew in Alytus region.

As an administrative unit Alytus region was established in 1950. Later on a few changes and reforms were introduced. The history of bigger and smaller towns and villages dates from older times. Some of them are more than one hundred year old.

Simnas, Daugai, Butrimonys and Punia were known in the manors of Lithuanian Grand Dukes and Polish kings. Krokialaukis was famous for the horses grown for the rulers. In Pivašiūnai, that in 1639 were gifted to the Old Trakai Benedictine monastery. Thousands of prayers from Lithuania and abroad gather to honour the Picture of The Blessed Virgin Mary during the feast of The Assumption. Czarist Russia government established the parish in Alovė in 1795. The town of Alytus belonged to it from the rebelion of 1831 to the end of the century. The first metrics of the Miroslavas parish are dated to 1746. An important object that had a great influence on the education and the history of the town was Marians monastery, one of the oldest in Lithuania. It was established in 1763 and acted until 1864. Nemunaitis was famous for its Franciscan Monastery mentioned in written sources since 1384 and it became a town in 1519. Raitininkai was first mentioned in more than 400 years ago.

Municipality activities cover different fields: education, culture, health, sports, ect. Alytus district municipality in the area of investment and development is targeted to public infrastructure, business, tourism and agricultural development, modern and safe society. Municipality supports small and medium businesses, projects of youth and rural communities.

Daugai and Simnas complex development projects have been implemented. Cultural centres, parks, sidewalks, streets and square have been put in order. Great attention is paid to the environmental issues, water treatment plant constructions have been made in many villages, reconstructed or newly built sewage treatment plants. The largest investment was intended for water and household sewage development in Simnas town.

Local roads network length in Alytus municipality is more than 1116 km. Alovė – Ilgai, Pivašiūnai – Eigirdonys, Nemunaitis – Makniūnai and other roads were paved using the EU and district budgets

There are 12 secondary schools in the district: 6 gymnasiums, 2 basic schools, 3 schools – multifunction centers, special school for disabled children, two vocational schools – Simnas Agriculture, Daugai Technology and Business School, Art and Sport School, three kindergardens.Sports fields have been renewed near the schools. Not only the schoolchildren but also other inhabitants can spend there leisure time. 

Primary and individual health care is conducted and social environment is improved in the district. Primary individual health care is conducted by the Primary Health Care Centre , Miroslavas dispensery, Family clinics joint stock company „Disolis“. The district municipality established an ambulance station. There is supportive treatment and hospice hospital in Daugai, that belongs to Primary Health Care Centre.

In Butrimonys, Rimėnai, Krokilaukis, Alovė, Pivašiūnai have been established child care day centres, in Simnas- day centre for disabled, in Daugai – social care centre, in Miroslavas and Pivašiūnai - municipal care home, in Rumbonys and Pivašiūnai – parish care home.

In order to involve citizens into making decisions, municipality enabled the inhabitants to watch Municipality council meeting on the Internet, express their opinijon on discussing questions, take an active part in political and public life. Improving the quality of public services. One-cell principle was introduced in order to improve the quality of public services, also e-system of sorting out documents, provided e-services.

Farmers of Alytus region are engaged in organic and conventional agriculture, alternative bussinesses, beekeeping. Rapeseed and buckwheat corn are grown. Milk and meat production is being developed. District municipality carries out the modern and advanced farming, agriculural support, various projects.

Various businesses are developped in the district. Municipality has a foundation of small and medium businesses, that funds are used for establishing the new worklplaces, training of the employees, consultations, professional development, exhibitions and fairs.

Alytus district nature is the space for an active leisure. In Daugai there is a renewed rowing base, equipped beaches, outdoor fitness equipment and children‘s playground in the town square. The surroundings for relaxation are adapted to the lakes such as the lake of Daugai Didžiulis etc. There is a possibility to spend your leisure time in the amusement park „Tarzanija“.

Alytus region can be distinguished for its traditional crafts, cultural and culinary heritage. National values are cherished in Vaisodžiai, Daugai, Alovė craft yard, where educational activities are held. There are a lot of sights in the region: 72 ecological monuments, 96 cemeteries, 246 church books, 144 art, 29 architecture and 3 urban monuments.

The majority of the churches are architectural monuments. One can get acquainted with them during pilgrimages, during which seven Alytus‘ churches are visited. The destination of the pilgrimage is the Pivašiūnai Church that is involved into national John Paul‘s pilgrimage route. Pivašiūnai church is a well known shrine in Kaišiadorys diocesan. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is celebrated there.

The works of Art such as paintings, sculptures, altars are mainly saved in churches. Also there are lots of crosses, roadside poles with statuettes of saints. Architectual heritage includes churches, chapels, houses, barns. The most valuable heritage is Rumbonys church, Simnas church, Punia mound, painter Žmuidzinavičius‘ memorial farmstead, works of art, roadside poles with statuettes of saints. The main squares of Simnas, Daugai, Butrimonys are included on the list of urban monuments.

There are 19 mounds in Alytus region with ancient settlements. The most famous is the mound of Punia, also called Margis mound, that stands in the confluence of the Nemunas and Punelė rivers. Other mounds are Kaukai, Obelytė, Obelija, Papėčiai (standing on it one can see the three biggest lakes of Dzūkija: Obelija, Dusia, Meteliai). It is planned to build a mobil pier and establish the needed infrastructure in Punia.

In the area of Nemunaitis Vangelonys village one can see an impressive rock of Dzūkija, a geological monument.

Tourists can have a rest in modernly equipped rural tourism homesteads.

Various festivals are held in the district, where art groups of the Alytus distict present their programs as well as quests from Lithuania and foreign countries. Folkloric competitions, games are organized during these events. Folk artists, craftsmen, salesmen sell various woodcrafts, woolen, leather, iron items. The State Day is traditionally celebrated in Daugai on the bank of the lake Didžiulis. Local groups and guests from abroad present their programmes.

The biggest celebration of the region is commemoration of National Day, traditionally in Daugai, Lithuanian Independence Restoration Day that is organized in Simnas along with a big fair.

Municipality organizes nominations „Best of the Year“ celebration where the citizens of the region are honoured for their activities, creative work and achievements. The nominations of the best teacher, businessman, young personality, cultural worker, rural community luminary, farmer, cleric are announced.

Municipality elects honorary Citizen of the district. A citizen gets district honorary award for special merits to the Alytus region and Lithuania through long term systematic social activities in the field of science, culture, sports, art, health and in other fields,also for noble deeds that had great influence on society. Candidates for the award can be proposed by rural communities, associations, groups of citizens of the region.

Alytus regional rural theatre festival „Kaimo liktarna“ opens the door of the parent‘s farmstead of the artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius in Balkūnai. The best theatre groups compete for the prize of the theatre artist Vytautas Maknis.

In the end of summer thousands of prayers participate in the feast of Assumption in Pivašiūnai. 

After it merry-making takes place next to Ilgis lake.

The district of Alytus is waiting for everyone who wish to live, work, travel, relax, get acquainted with its history and the present.
